About the Author
Eric Carle is a well-known and adored author of picture books for very young children that are inventively created and gorgeously illustrated. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, his best-known book, has sold over 55 million copies and been translated into 70 languages. More than 170 million copies of Carle’s books have been sold worldwide, and he has illustrated more than 70 best-selling books—the majority of which he also wrote. For her lifelong accomplishments in children’s literature, Carle was given the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003 (now known as the Children’s Literature Legacy Award). The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (www.carlemuseum.org), a 40,000-square-foot facility in Amherst, Massachusetts, was cofounded in 2002 by Eric and his wife, Barbara. Its purpose is to celebrate picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world, highlighting the artistic, cultural, and historical significance of picture books and their art form. At the age of 91, Eric Carle died in May 2021. His work continues to have a significant impact on contemporary illustrators and artists.
