When a fever is suspected in children ages three to four, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises taking a corrective temperature reading. The most accurate and fastest measurements are RECTAL ones. Apply petroleum jelly to the tip, then carefully enter it ~1/2″ (1 cm) into the child’s rectum. For kids five years old and up, ORAL usage is a practical approach. Prior to taking the child’s temperature, wait fifteen minutes after they have completed eating or drinking. In a cooperative child, ARMPIT (Axillary) use is also a possibility, albeit less precise than rectal or oral temperature. From a medical perspective, this approach should not be employed if exact measurements are needed because it may yield erroneous values.
